The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Scientist / Laboratory Supervisor (Internal Promotion)
5-8 years of prior experienceSkills to master
- You'd have already mastered leading small projects, mentoring junior staff, and owning specific technical areas. You'd need to develop stronger skills in budget management, strategic resource planning, and cross-functional influence.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 2-3 complex OOS investigations to resolution.
- Consistently delivered projects on time and to a high quality standard.
- Received positive feedback on mentorship and team guidance.
- Proactively identified and proposed solutions for lab inefficiencies.
- 2
Laboratory Manager (from another R&D organisation)
8-12 years of prior experienceSkills to master
- You'd bring existing management experience, but would need to quickly adapt to our specific R&D pipeline, existing QMS, and company culture. Understanding our specific regulatory landscape and key stakeholders would be crucial.
You're ready to move on when
- Managed a lab of similar size and complexity in a regulated environment.
- Demonstrated experience with budget responsibility and team leadership.
- Successfully navigated a regulatory audit in a previous role.
- Ability to quickly build rapport and influence new teams and stakeholders.
- 3
Quality Assurance Specialist (with strong lab background)
8-10 years of prior experienceSkills to master
- You'd have an exceptional understanding of GxP and quality systems, but would need to develop stronger operational management skills—think resource allocation, instrument maintenance, and day-to-day team leadership. Your focus shifts from auditing to enabling.
You're ready to move on when
- Deep expertise in GxP regulations and quality systems.
- Previous hands-on lab experience (at least 3-5 years).
- Demonstrated ability to influence and train operational teams on quality matters.
- Strong problem-solving skills applied to compliance issues.
