The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Manager, Circular Operations (L5)
3-5 years as a ManagerSkills to master
- At the Manager level, you'd have mastered leading a large team, owning a significant departmental budget, and delivering on key circularity KPIs. To step up to Director, you need to demonstrate the ability to define multi-year strategy, influence at the C-suite level, and drive cross-functional transformation across an entire business unit, not just a department.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully launched and scaled a major circularity programme that delivered significant P&L impact (e.g., £1M+).
- Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships and influence VPs and other Directors across the organisation.
- Developed and mentored several managers who are ready for increased responsibility.
- Presented strategic proposals to the COO or Board, receiving positive feedback and buy-in.
- 2
From Head of Operations / Supply Chain (with sustainability focus)
5-8 years in a Head of Operations/Supply Chain roleSkills to master
- You'd already be a seasoned operational leader, but to transition to Director, Sustainable Operations, you'd need to deepen your expertise in circular economy principles, regulatory compliance, and ESG reporting. It's about applying your operational excellence through a sustainability lens and driving that strategic shift.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully integrated sustainability metrics into core operational KPIs and decision-making.
- Led initiatives that significantly reduced the environmental footprint of existing operations (e.g., waste, energy, water).
- Demonstrated a passion for and deep understanding of circular economy concepts and their business value.
- Proactively engaged with external sustainability experts or industry bodies.
