The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Customer Retention Specialist (L2)
2-3 years at L2Skills to master
- Mastering end-to-end campaign ownership, basic cohort analysis, A/B testing, and demonstrating proactive problem-solving. You'd also start informally mentoring new joiners.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeding campaign performance targets for your owned initiatives.
- Proposing and leading new campaign ideas, not just executing assigned tasks.
- Independently identifying and troubleshooting issues within marketing automation platforms.
- Receiving positive feedback from peers and your manager on your analytical skills and initiative.
- 2
From Marketing Analyst (with Retention Focus)
3-5 years as an AnalystSkills to master
- Deepening your analytical skills specifically in churn prediction, customer segmentation, and LTV modelling. You'd also need to develop strong communication skills to translate data into marketing strategies.
You're ready to move on when
- Regularly presenting complex customer insights to marketing leadership.
- Proactively identifying retention opportunities from data and proposing marketing interventions.
- Demonstrating an understanding of marketing automation platforms and customer journey design.
- Taking initiative to collaborate directly with marketing teams on campaign strategy.
- 3
From CRM Specialist / Email Marketing Manager
4-6 years in CRM/EmailSkills to master
- Expanding your expertise beyond email to multi-channel customer journeys, integrating with CDPs, and developing a stronger understanding of broader retention strategy and churn drivers.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managing complex, automated email nurture sequences with strong performance.
- Demonstrating an ability to segment audiences based on behaviour, not just demographics.
- Proposing and implementing A/B tests that drive significant improvements in engagement.
- Showing a keen interest in the 'why' behind customer behaviour and a desire to influence it.
