3What this role really is

A social media coordinator manages a brand's voice online, posting content and responding to customers day to day.

4What you'd actually use

The tools this job runs on, and how well you'd need to know each one.

Sprout Social or Hootsuite Enterprise Intermediate

Scheduling approved content, monitoring the Smart Inbox for engagement, pulling pre-built reports on channel performance.

Brandwatch or Talkwalker (basic features) Basic

Monitoring keywords in pre-configured dashboards, understanding basic sentiment indicators, flagging unusual spikes in mentions.

Canva Intermediate

Using existing brand templates to create rapid social media assets, resizing images, and adding text overlays for approved campaigns.

CapCut Intermediate

Performing basic video edits for short-form content (e.g., trimming, adding text, simple transitions) for Reels or TikToks.

Asana or Monday.com Intermediate

Managing personal tasks, updating content calendar entries, attaching final assets for approval, tracking post-publication status.

5What you get to decide, and how that grows

Power in a job isn't your title. It's what you're allowed to decide. Here's how it grows as you move up.

The choiceComing in Where you are nowThe step above
Content Scheduling & Publishing Schedules pre-approved content; all final content and timing must be signed off by Social Media Specialist. Independently schedules routine content; seeks approval for new campaign launches or high-impact posts. Approves content scheduling for entire workstreams; defines publishing guidelines and best practices for junior team members.
Community Engagement & Response Responds to basic, templated enquiries; escalates all complex, negative, or sensitive comments to Social Media Specialist. Handles most routine engagement independently; identifies and escalates potential crisis situations. Defines community engagement guidelines; handles crisis communication responses with input from Director.
Social Media Reporting Pulls raw data and populates pre-built report templates; no independent analysis. Compiles and presents basic performance reports; offers initial observations on trends. Designs and delivers comprehensive performance reports with actionable insights; makes recommendations based on data.

6How you'll be judged

The scoreboard, and what is not on it. The hard targets, how often each is actually looked at, and the quiet signals that never reach a dashboard.

Response Time for Inbound Enquiries
How quickly you respond to comments, DMs, and mentions across our main social channels.
Target · Average response time under 12 hours for 95% of inbound messages.

If we get 100 messages in a week, you'll need to respond to at least 95 of them within 12 hours. We're talking about the initial reply, not necessarily resolving the whole issue.

Publishing Accuracy Rate
The percentage of scheduled posts that go out without any errors (typos, broken links, incorrect tags, wrong images).
Target · Less than 1% error rate on all scheduled posts.

If you schedule 100 posts in a month, you should have no more than one post with a mistake. This means double-checking everything before hitting 'schedule'!

Content Calendar Adherence
How well you stick to the agreed-upon content calendar, ensuring posts are scheduled and published as planned.
Target · 98% of assigned posts published on time, as per the calendar.

If there are 50 posts assigned to you in a week, 49 of them need to go out exactly when they're supposed to. We know things happen, but consistency is key.

Basic Reporting Completion
Timely and accurate completion of basic social media performance reports.
Target · 100% of weekly/monthly reports completed on time and without errors.

You'll pull the weekly engagement numbers from Sprout Social, put them into our template, and send them over by Tuesday morning, every week. No excuses.

Brand Voice Consistency
How well your responses and basic copy reflect our established brand tone and guidelines.
  • Your manager rarely needs to edit your responses for tone. You receive positive feedback from the Social Media Specialist on your adherence to brand guidelines. Your written communication sounds like 'us', not generic corporate-speak. You're not just copying and pasting, you're understanding the nuance.
Proactive Learning & Initiative
Your willingness to learn new tools, ask questions, and take on new tasks without being constantly prompted.
  • You're asking 'why' we do things a certain way. You've completed a relevant online course in your own time. You've spotted a small improvement we could make to our scheduling process and suggested it. You're not waiting to be told what to do next if your plate is clear.
Escalation Judgement
Your ability to recognise when an issue needs to be escalated to a senior team member, rather than trying to handle it yourself.
  • You're bringing complex customer complaints or potentially negative brand mentions to your manager's attention quickly. You're not guessing when you're unsure
  • you're asking for help. We'd rather you ask too often than not often enough at this stage.
Team Collaboration
How effectively you work with your immediate team and other departments, especially Content and Customer Support.
  • You respond promptly to requests from the Content team for asset updates. You're sharing relevant customer feedback with Customer Support. You're generally easy to work with and contribute positively to team discussions. You're not a silo.

7Would you like it

Both sides. What people enjoy, and what grinds them down.

What people enjoy
Making a Visible Impact

You'll see your scheduled posts go live and watch the comments and likes roll in. Your responses will directly help customers or build goodwill. It's pretty immediate feedback on your work.

You'll schedule a post and then see it get hundreds of likes and comments, knowing you played a part in getting that message out there and engaging our audience.

Learning & Development

You'll be constantly exposed to new social media trends, tools, and strategies. Your manager will actively mentor you, and you'll get to experiment (within guidelines, of course).

You'll be tasked with researching a new TikTok trend and then helping to draft some content ideas around it, learning how to adapt our brand voice for different platforms.

Being Part of a Team

You'll work closely with the Social Media Specialist and the wider Marketing team. There's a lot of collaboration, shared goals, and support when things get tough.

When a tricky customer query comes in, you won't be left alone; you'll work with Customer Support or your manager to craft the best response.

What frustrates people
  • The sheer volume of content and comments can feel overwhelming sometimes.
  • Having to follow strict brand guidelines, even when you have a 'better' idea.
  • Dealing with negative comments or trolls, which can be draining.
  • The algorithms changing, meaning what worked yesterday might not work today.
  • Chasing down assets or approvals from other teams to get posts out on time.
What this role does not give you
  • Full strategic autonomy or decision-making power on major campaigns (not yet, anyway).
  • A quiet, solitary work environment – you'll be constantly connected and interacting.
  • A 9-to-5 where you can switch off completely; sometimes urgent issues pop up outside hours.
  • A role where you don't have to deal with public feedback, both good and bad.

8Who you work with

This role directly supports the daily operation of our social media channels, ensuring consistent brand presence and timely engagement. Your work helps maintain our online reputation and provides the first line of interaction with our audience, which is pretty crucial for brand perception and customer loyalty. Get it right, and we look professional and approachable. Get it wrong, and we could miss opportunities or even upset customers.

Inside the business
  • Social Media Specialist (your direct manager)
  • Content Marketing Team (who create the assets)
  • Customer Support (for escalating tricky customer queries)
  • Product Marketing (for new product launches)
Outside the business
  • Our social media audience (the most important ones!)
  • Basic social media tool support (e.g., Sprout Social helpdesk)

9What you need before you start

Not a wish list. The things you would be expected to already have.

  • Some practical experience managing social media channels, even if it's for a personal brand, a university society, or a small business. We want to see you've actually 'done' it.
  • A solid grasp of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Typos are a big no-no here.
  • Basic familiarity with social media scheduling tools – you don't need to be an expert, but you should know what they are.
  • A genuine interest in social media trends, internet culture, and how brands communicate online.

10What to practise next

Where the job is going, and what to do about it starting this week.

Advanced Social Listening Queries

Moving beyond basic keyword monitoring means understanding how to build more complex queries to track specific campaigns, competitor activities, or emerging industry trends. It allows us to be more proactive and insightful.

Boolean Operators (AND, OR, NOT) · Sentiment Analysis Nuances · Topic & Theme Clustering

  • This week: Ask your Social Media Specialist to walk you through one of their complex Brandwatch queries.
  • This month: Practice building 2-3 simple Boolean queries in a test environment or a free tool.
  • Month 2: Propose a new keyword or phrase we should be tracking based on a recent trend you've noticed.
  • Month 3: Take a Brandwatch or Talkwalker certification course (if available) to deepen your understanding.

Quick win: Familiarise yourself with the 'exclude' function in our current social listening tool to filter out spam or irrelevant mentions.

11Staying current once you are in

What people here do to keep up
  • Follow key industry leaders and publications (e.g., Social Media Today, Marketing Week) to stay current.
  • Experiment with new social media features and platforms in your own time.
  • Attend free webinars or online workshops on social media trends and tools.
  • Network with other junior social media professionals to share insights and experiences.

12The rising capability

What's rising in its place

This is where the work is heading, and the higher pay with it. Get fluent here and the shift stops being a threat and starts being your edge.

Short-Form Video Storytelling

TikTok and Instagram Reels aren't going anywhere; in fact, they're becoming the primary way many audiences consume content. Brands that can't tell a compelling story in 15-60 seconds will get left behind. It's about capturing attention instantly.

  • Hook-Driven Content
  • Native Platform Features
  • Call-to-Action Integration
  • Audience Retention Metrics

AI-Assisted Content Creation

AI isn't just for coding anymore; it's a powerful tool for generating ideas and drafting copy. If you can use AI effectively, you'll be able to produce more content, faster, and free up your time for more creative tasks. It's about being more productive, not less human.

15Where this role leads

The long view: This work can lead to a senior social media specialist role, a social media strategist role, or a social media manager role in time.

The ten Future Fluencies

Zavmo analysis

The credential is what you can do today. These are what keep you valuable.

A qualification proves you can do the job as it's defined today. These ten are what decide whether you're still the obvious person for it in five years. They're the capabilities employers are now writing into senior roles faster than people are learning them. Zavmo weaves them through whatever you study, so you come out with both: the credential and the fluency.

The highlighted ones are the Fluencies your role leans on hardest, from how Social Media Coordinator is actually changing.

The career path, and where it branches

Social Media Coordinator is a start, not a ceiling. Each step below asks for new skills and hands back more autonomy.

  1. This is your natural next step, where you'll start owning specific channels and drafting original content, not just scheduling.

    • Drafting original, on-brand social media copy for specific campaigns.
    • Creating simple visual assets (e.g., using Canva) without direct supervision.
    • Managing the day-to-day content calendar for 1-2 specific platforms end-to-end.
    • Conducting basic campaign performance analysis and identifying initial insights.
Working with AI on the job

Working with AI

Where AI is starting to help

Let's be real, social media is a beast. There's always more to do than hours in the day. But here's the thing: AI isn't here to replace you; it's here to make your life easier. We're talking about taking the grunt work out of your day so you can focus on the fun, creative stuff.

Even as a Social Media Coordinator, you'll be using AI tools to get more done. Think of AI as your super-efficient assistant, helping you draft copy, summarise mountains of comments, and even spot trends before they go viral. It's about working smarter, not harder, and giving you more time to learn and grow.

First-Draft & Variant Generation

Use generative AI (like Jasper or ChatGPT) to quickly create 5-10 different versions of copy for a single social post. You can tell it to adapt the tone for different platforms – professional for LinkedIn, a bit more cheeky for X. This means you're not staring at a blank screen, saving your creative energy for refining the best options.

AI-Powered Sentiment Summaries

Imagine a big announcement gets hundreds of comments. Instead of reading every single one, AI tools built into platforms like Sprout Social can instantly summarise the overall mood – is it mostly positive, negative, or neutral? It'll also highlight the key themes people are talking about, saving you hours of manual sifting, especially during busy periods.

Creative Brainstorming & Trend Analysis

Feeling stuck for ideas? Use AI as your brainstorming buddy. You can prompt it with things like, 'Act as a social media strategist. Give me 10 ideas for a TikTok video about our new software update, inspired by current trends.' It's brilliant for breaking through creative blocks and helping you adapt our brand to what's currently popular online.

Intelligent Content Repurposing

Got a long video, like a webinar or a podcast? AI tools (like Opus Clip) can automatically watch it, identify the most engaging bits, and then chop them up into multiple short-form clips (think Reels, Shorts, TikToks) – complete with captions. This means one piece of long content can become dozens of social posts, without you having to manually edit everything.
