The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Senior Integrated Technology Specialist (Internal)
2-4 years at Senior levelSkills to master
- At the Senior level, you'd have mastered individual system integrations and become a subject matter expert. To step up to Lead, you need to develop strong architectural design skills, learn to manage and mentor a small team, and start influencing strategic technology decisions.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 3+ complex, multi-system integration projects end-to-end.
- Consistently sought out for technical advice by peers and managers.
- Demonstrated ability to present technical solutions clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Actively mentored junior team members, providing guidance and support.
- 2
From PropTech Solutions Architect (External)
Direct entry with 8-12 years experienceSkills to master
- You'd already have the architectural chops. Here, you'd need to quickly get up to speed on our specific legacy systems, understand our organisational politics (yes, it's a thing), and adapt your leadership style to our culture.
You're ready to move on when
- Portfolio of complex solution designs and successful implementations.
- Experience leading technical teams, even if not direct reports.
- Proven ability to navigate complex vendor ecosystems and manage external relationships.
- Strong understanding of Facilities Management operational challenges and how technology solves them.
- 3
From Senior Building Automation Engineer (External)
Direct entry with 10+ years experience, possibly with a transition periodSkills to master
- You'd have deep BMS/BAS knowledge. You'd need to expand your expertise into IWMS, CMMS, IoT platforms, and data analytics. Crucially, you'd need to shift from purely operational engineering to strategic technology architecture and team leadership.
You're ready to move on when
- Deep expertise in at least one major BMS platform (e.g., Tridium, Metasys).
- Experience with network protocols (BACnet, Modbus) and system integration at the hardware level.
- Demonstrated interest and self-study in IT/OT convergence and broader PropTech solutions.
- Some experience managing projects or leading small technical initiatives.
