The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Director/VP of International Products (L6)
3-5 years in roleSkills to master
- Mastering business unit P&L management (£2M-£10M+), leading large, multi-functional teams (25-100+), driving multi-year business unit transformations, and presenting to the Executive Committee.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistent achievement of aggressive GWP growth and profitability targets for a major international product portfolio.
- Successful leadership of significant product-related M&A integrations or divestments.
- Demonstrated ability to influence executive-level stakeholders and shape business unit strategy.
- Strong track record of developing and mentoring product leadership talent.
- 2
Head of a Major Business Unit (e.g., Head of P&C)
5-7 years in roleSkills to master
- Full P&L ownership for an entire business unit, end-to-end management of underwriting, claims, sales, and product functions, and deep engagement with investor relations from a business unit perspective.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven leadership of a complex business unit, delivering strong financial results and strategic objectives.
- Experience navigating cross-functional challenges and driving alignment across all business unit functions.
- Demonstrated ability to represent the business unit effectively to external stakeholders and the Board.
- 3
Chief Operating Officer (COO) or Chief Strategy Officer (CSO)
5-10 years in roleSkills to master
- Enterprise-wide operational excellence, strategic planning across all functions, and driving major organisational change initiatives. Product knowledge is crucial here, but broadened to the entire enterprise.
You're ready to move on when
- A track record of successfully leading large-scale operational or strategic transformations.
- Deep understanding of the entire value chain of an insurance business, beyond just product.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and collaborate with all C-suite peers.
