The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From ESG Communications Specialist (L2) internally
2-3 years as an L2Skills to master
- Taking full ownership of project deliverables, proactively identifying reporting improvements, starting to mentor junior colleagues, and consistently delivering high-quality, assurance-ready content.
You're ready to move on when
- You've successfully managed at least one full ESG reporting cycle (or a major section of it) from start to finish.
- You're the 'go-to' person for specific reporting frameworks or data areas within the team.
- You've shown initiative in proposing new communication strategies or process improvements.
- You've informally mentored new joiners and are comfortable guiding others.
- 2
From a Sustainability Consultant role
5-7 years in consultingSkills to master
- Adapting consulting best practices to an in-house corporate environment, building deep internal stakeholder relationships, and translating theoretical knowledge into practical, actionable communications strategies for a single organisation.
You're ready to move on when
- You've led ESG reporting or communications projects for multiple clients.
- You're comfortable presenting to senior client stakeholders and managing complex deliverables.
- You understand the nuances of corporate internal politics and how to navigate them.
- You're keen to 'go deep' with one company rather than broad with many.
- 3
From a Senior Corporate Communications or Investor Relations role (with ESG focus)
6-8 years in communications/IRSkills to master
- Deepening your understanding of specific ESG data points and reporting frameworks, translating general communications principles into the highly scrutinised ESG context, and working closely with technical sustainability teams.
You're ready to move on when
- You have a strong track record of crafting compelling corporate narratives and managing reputation.
- You've worked on investor-facing communications, ideally including ESG-related disclosures.
- You're eager to specialise in the technical aspects of sustainability reporting.
- You're comfortable with data and can quickly learn new frameworks.
