3-5 years at L5Skills to master
- Moving from managing a team/project to managing a portfolio of teams and projects. Developing strategic foresight, mastering cross-functional influence at an executive level, and taking accountability for larger P&L impacts.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managed an R&D department with a budget of £1M+ and 10+ direct/indirect reports.
- Consistently delivered projects that have successfully transitioned from TRL 6 to TRL 9.
- Demonstrated ability to influence product roadmaps and business strategy.
- Proven capability in developing and mentoring other R&D leaders.

From Head of Technology / VP of Engineering (External)
Direct entry, typically 15+ years total experience.Skills to master
- Adapting to our specific industry domain and R&D culture. Quickly building credibility with our existing technical teams and executive leadership. Understanding our IP portfolio and competitive landscape.

- Led a technology function of similar scale and complexity in a comparable industry.
- Track record of driving innovation and commercialisation in a competitive environment.
- Strong external network and reputation as a technology leader.
- Proven experience in strategic planning and executive communication.

From Technical Consulting Partner (Specialised R&D)
Direct entry, typically 18+ years total experience.Skills to master
- Transitioning from an advisory role to an executive operational leadership role. Building and managing an internal team, rather than project-based client teams. Deepening understanding of our specific product lines and internal processes.
You're ready to move on when
- Led significant R&D strategy engagements for multiple large clients.
- Successfully advised on technology roadmapping, IP strategy, and innovation portfolio management.
- Demonstrated ability to translate strategic recommendations into actionable plans.
- Strong client management and executive communication skills.
