How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

3-5 years as an L4Skills to master
- At L4, you'd have mastered designing the corporate GHG data architecture, leading complex projects like SBTi validation, and mentoring junior team members. You'd have a strong grasp of our internal processes and stakeholder landscape.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 2-3 major climate strategy projects (e.g., TCFD analysis, SBTi submission) end-to-end.
- Consistently received positive feedback on your ability to influence cross-functional teams without direct authority.
- Demonstrated strong leadership potential through formal and informal mentorship of junior colleagues.
- Proactively identified and implemented process improvements that significantly enhanced efficiency or data quality.

Senior Consultant in ESG/Climate (from external firm)
5-8 years in a senior consulting roleSkills to master
- You'd bring deep technical expertise in GHG accounting, regulatory compliance, and climate risk from advising multiple clients. You'd be skilled in project management, client delivery, and often, team leadership.
You're ready to move on when
- Managed multiple client engagements focused on corporate decarbonisation or ESG strategy.
- Successfully delivered complex technical reports and presentations to C-suite clients.
- Proven ability to manage project budgets, timelines, and client expectations.

Head of Environmental Compliance / EHS Manager (from another industry)
5-7 years in a similar leadership roleSkills to master
- You'd have strong experience in environmental management systems, regulatory compliance, and managing environmental data, albeit potentially with a broader scope than just carbon. You'd bring operational experience and a strong understanding of risk.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managed a significant environmental compliance programme for a large organisation.
- Demonstrated ability to implement and assure environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
- Experience managing budgets and leading a team of environmental specialists.
- Proven track record of engaging with regulators and managing external audits.
