How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

Senior Standards Specialist / Lead Standards Manager (Internal Promotion)
5-8 years as a Senior Specialist, then 3-5 years as a Lead ManagerSkills to master
- Independently managing complex standards projects, leading ballot reconciliation, facilitating Working Group meetings, and informally mentoring junior team members. You'd also need to demonstrate strong stakeholder management and initial budget oversight.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 3+ complex standards projects from NWIP to publication.
- Received consistent positive feedback on your ability to influence and build consensus.
- Taken initiative on process improvements or new programme proposals.
- Demonstrated ability to manage project budgets up to £50K and report on them accurately.

Regulatory Affairs Manager (from another industry)
Roughly 10-15 years in a similar industry, with 5+ years in a managerial role.Skills to master
- Translating regulatory requirements into actionable internal policies, managing a team focused on regulatory compliance, and engaging with regulatory bodies. You'd need to quickly get up to speed on the specifics of international standards development processes (ISO/IEC Directives).
You're ready to move on when
- Managed a team responsible for regulatory submissions or compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
- Successfully influenced regulatory outcomes or navigated complex regulatory changes.
- Strong understanding of how standards are referenced in regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new complex procedural frameworks quickly.

Technical Lead / Principal Engineer (from a technical discipline)
12-18 years in a technical role, with significant experience contributing to standards.Skills to master
- Deep technical expertise in a relevant field, experience contributing to or chairing technical committees, and a proven ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise language. You'd need to develop strong people management and strategic planning skills.
You're ready to move on when
- Chaired or convened an international Working Group or contributed significantly to multiple standards.
- Recognised as a subject matter expert with strong communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical discussions and build consensus among peers.
- Expressed a strong interest and aptitude for people leadership and strategic oversight.
