The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Prototype & Test Engineer (L3/L4)
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- Leading complex test campaigns, mentoring junior staff, designing novel test methods, and demonstrating strong project ownership. You'd need to show a clear aptitude for strategic thinking and people management.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led multiple critical validation projects end-to-end.
- Consistently provided high-quality technical mentorship to junior engineers.
- Demonstrated ability to influence design decisions based on test findings.
- Took initiative to improve test processes or introduce new methodologies.
- 2
R&D Project Lead / Engineering Manager (from another R&D discipline)
4-6 yearsSkills to master
- While your technical domain might be different, you'd need to prove strong leadership, project management, and cross-functional collaboration skills. You'd also need to quickly get up to speed on the specifics of prototyping and testing methodologies.
You're ready to move on when
- Managed a team of engineers or scientists in a different R&D area.
- Delivered complex R&D projects on time and within budget.
- Strong track record of problem-solving and technical decision-making.
- Demonstrated eagerness and ability to learn new technical domains quickly.
- 3
Principal Engineer (Individual Contributor path)
2-4 yearsSkills to master
- If you're coming from a Principal Engineer role, you'll already be an ultimate technical authority. The leap to Manager means developing strong people management skills, budget ownership, and strategic planning for a team, rather than just technical strategy.
You're ready to move on when
- Recognised as a top technical expert in your field.
- Provided significant informal leadership and mentorship.
- Expressed a clear desire and aptitude for formal people management.
- Demonstrated ability to influence organisational strategy without direct reports.
