The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Outsourcing Strategy Specialist (L2)
2-3 yearsSkills to master
- Moving from supporting to leading full assessments, independently managing vendor RFPs, and taking full ownership of project outcomes. You'll need to get really good at influencing without direct authority.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering high-quality TCO models and market research with minimal supervision.
- Successfully managing smaller vendor relationships and minor contract renegotiations.
- Proactively identifying process improvement opportunities.
- Demonstrating strong presentation skills to mid-level management.
- 2
From BPO Consulting (e.g., Senior Consultant at a Big 4 firm)
Direct entry (0-1 year ramp-up)Skills to master
- Adapting to our specific internal culture and processes, building strong relationships with our internal business unit leaders, and getting comfortable with our tech stack. You'll need to learn how to 'land' your recommendations within a single organisation.
You're ready to move on when
- Quickly building rapport with internal stakeholders and understanding our unique business challenges.
- Successfully translating external consulting frameworks into practical internal implementation plans.
- Demonstrating an understanding of our specific industry sector and competitive landscape.
- 3
From a Senior Procurement/Sourcing Role (with BPO focus)
1-2 yearsSkills to master
- Shifting from a transactional procurement mindset to a more strategic, end-to-end outsourcing strategy approach. This means deeper dives into process re-engineering, TCO modelling beyond just price, and long-term value realisation.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managing complex service contracts, not just commodity procurement.
- Demonstrating an understanding of service level agreements (SLAs) and operational level agreements (OLAs).
- Proactively identifying opportunities for strategic vendor consolidation or new sourcing models.
