The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Senior Financial Compliance Officer
3-5 years as a Senior OfficerSkills to master
- You'd have spent time leading smaller projects, handling complex investigations independently, and informally mentoring junior colleagues. You'd also have a deep understanding of at least one or two core regulatory areas.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 2-3 significant compliance projects from start to finish.
- Consistently received positive feedback on your ability to interpret complex regulations and advise the business.
- Demonstrated initiative in identifying process improvements or new control needs.
- Successfully mentored a new joiner or junior analyst, helping them develop their skills.
- 2
From Lead Compliance Analyst (Specialised Area)
4-6 years in a specialised lead analyst roleSkills to master
- Coming from a highly specialised area (e.g., sanctions screening lead, AML investigations lead), you'd need to broaden your regulatory knowledge and demonstrate an ability to design holistic compliance programmes, not just specific processes.
You're ready to move on when
- Expert-level knowledge in your specialised compliance domain.
- Experience in designing and optimising specific compliance processes or systems.
- Ability to translate highly technical compliance requirements into clear business actions.
- Proven ability to influence stakeholders in your specialised area.
- 3
From External Audit / Advisory (Financial Crime)
5-8 years in a Big Four or specialist advisory firmSkills to master
- You'd bring strong technical knowledge of regulations and audit methodologies. You'd need to adapt to an 'in-house' perspective, focusing on building and operating controls rather than just testing them, and developing internal stakeholder management skills.
You're ready to move on when
- Extensive experience auditing or advising on financial crime controls for various clients.
- Strong understanding of internal control frameworks (e.g., COSO).
- Ability to translate external audit findings into actionable internal remediation plans.
- Experience presenting findings and recommendations to client management.
