The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Outsourcing Specialist (L2)
2-3 yearsSkills to master
- You'd have spent this time mastering routine vendor performance reporting, getting really good at data analysis in Excel/Power BI, and taking ownership of smaller, less complex outsourced tasks. You'd also be comfortable with basic contract terms and initial vendor interactions.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently hitting SLAs for your assigned tasks without much supervision.
- Proactively identifying and resolving minor vendor issues.
- Successfully delivering on small, independent projects related to vendor performance.
- Receiving positive feedback on your analytical skills and attention to detail.
- 2
Process Improvement Analyst (from another department)
3-4 yearsSkills to master
- You'd have a strong background in mapping and optimising internal business processes, probably using Lean Six Sigma or similar methodologies. You'd be great at identifying inefficiencies and designing better workflows. The jump here is applying that to external vendors and understanding the contractual nuances.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven track record of driving measurable process efficiencies in previous roles.
- Strong command of process mapping tools (Bizagi, Signavio) and methodologies.
- Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders to adopt new processes.
- A clear understanding of how process changes impact operational metrics.
- 3
Junior Procurement/Sourcing Specialist
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- You'd be skilled in vendor selection, RFQ/RFP processes, and initial contract negotiation. Your focus would have been on getting the best deal. Moving into this role means shifting from 'getting the deal' to 'managing the deal' – ensuring ongoing performance and value, which is a different beast.
You're ready to move on when
- Experience managing a portfolio of smaller vendors or specific spend categories.
- Strong negotiation skills and understanding of contract fundamentals.
- Ability to conduct basic market analysis for vendor capabilities and pricing.
- Positive feedback on your ability to build initial vendor relationships.
