Checklist: 10 Signs Your Role Is Already Changing

A calm, honest checklist. Ten signs the work is shifting under you, and the one move each one calls for. Save it, tick it, act on it.

Your job is not going to announce that it is changing. It happens quietly, in small shifts you only notice once you add them up.

So here is the tally. Ten signs the work is moving under you. Read each one honestly. If it sounds like your week, tick it. At the bottom is what your score means, and the small first move that costs you nothing.

The Checklist

1. A new tool quietly does part of your job. Something you used to do by hand now gets drafted, sorted or summarised by software before you touch it.

2. You spend more time checking than making. Your day has shifted from producing the work to reviewing work that arrived half-done.

3. Your manager asks you to “validate” rather than “do”. The instruction changed from “run the analysis” to “check the analysis”. That is a signal, not a favour.

4. Someone asked you to document your process step by step. A written-down process is an easier process to automate. Worth knowing what happens next.

5. The job ads for your role look different. Roles like yours now ask for skills that were not there a year ago. Read three of them and see.

6. You are copying tasks into an AI tool on the quiet. If you are already leaning on it to keep up, the work has already changed. The only question is whether you get good at it on purpose.

7. A “boring” part of your week feels newly at risk. The repetitive, high-volume, rules-based part. That is the part that tends to move first, and the admin-heavy roles are the ones feeling it soonest.

8. New starters are expected to use tools you were never trained on. The baseline has shifted, and you are being measured against it without the training.

9. The people getting ahead are the ones fluent with the new tools. Not the loudest. The ones who point the tools well and catch what they get wrong.

10. You have started to wonder about all this yourself. You searched for it, or you are reading this. That instinct is usually right, and it is early enough to act on.

What Your Score Means

0 to 2 ticks. The work is stable for now, but the ground is moving in most fields. A good moment to get ahead while it is calm.

3 to 5 ticks. The shift has started. This is the sweet spot to act, because you have time and a real head start.

6 or more ticks. The work has already changed. Not a reason to panic. A reason to move, and to move deliberately rather than being moved.

Here is the reassuring part, and it is backed by the UK government’s own look at this. Around 70% of workers are in roles where AI can touch some tasks, but “exposed” does not mean “about to disappear”. For a large share of people, the tools are more likely to boost the work than take it. A high score means your job is changing, not ending.

Whatever your score, the sign that matters most is number 10. You noticed. That puts you ahead of most people, who will not look until they have to.

The One Move, Whatever You Ticked

Do not try to fix all ten. Do one thing. Find out what is actually shifting in your specific role, instead of guessing from headlines, and pick the single skill that answers it.

The fastest way to see it is to look up work like yours and read what is rising in it. It takes a few minutes and it costs nothing.

See what is changing in your role, and the one skill worth starting with.
