Getting the Most From a Lesson
Ten things that make a Zavmo lesson work harder for you. None of them take any extra time. Print this and keep it next to the desk for your first few sessions.
Before You Start
-
Give it fifteen minutes, not two
A lesson is a conversation, and conversations need a run-up. Short and regular beats one long push: three fifteen-minute sessions in a week will get you further than one hour on a Sunday night.
-
Have a real piece of work in mind
Bring the actual project, the actual customer, the actual problem on your desk. When you give Zavmo something specific to work with, the examples stop being generic and start being useful the same day.
While You Are In It
-
Answer in sentences, not words
A one-word answer gives Zavmo almost nothing to work with, and you will get a follow-up question instead of progress. Say what you think and why you think it. The more you put in, the sharper the next question comes back.
-
Talk if you would rather talk
There is a microphone in the answer bar. Most people say more out loud than they would ever type, and saying it out loud is closer to what you will have to do at work anyway.
-
Be wrong on purpose
The screen tells you there is no scoring on practice, and it means it. Guess. Think out loud. Take the position you are not sure about. Being wrong in practice is the cheapest way to find the edge of what you know.
-
Follow the tangent
If something sparks a question that is not on the plan, ask it. Zavmo notices when you go off exploring and will pick the thread back up in a later session. Curiosity is not a detour here.
When It Gets Hard
-
Say you are confused
There is a button for it. Using it is not an admission of anything, and it does not count against you. It changes how the next part is taught, which is the whole point of having a guide rather than a video.
-
Skip it and come back
Skip this one is a real option. Some ideas land better once the next one has been explained. You will meet it again if you need it.
-
Stop when you are tired
Save and finish later keeps your place. Pushing on through a session you have stopped absorbing is the one habit that reliably wastes your time.
-
Expect your guide to change
Different guides handle different kinds of thinking, so the one who explains a new idea is often not the one who makes you defend it. When the guide changes, it means the thinking has stepped up, not that something has gone wrong.
If you remember one thing
Zavmo cannot teach you well if it does not know what you are thinking. Everything on this sheet is a version of the same idea: say more, say it honestly, and say when you are lost. The lesson bends around what you tell it.
