The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

- Independently managing a client group, handling routine ER cases, running annual HR cycles (performance, comp), and building strong relationships with managers.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently receiving positive feedback from your client group and manager.
- Successfully resolving complex, non-routine ER cases with minimal supervision.

- Having managed the full employee lifecycle for a significant employee population.
- Experience advising senior leaders on a range of HR issues.
- A proven ability to balance operational demands with strategic people initiatives.
- A clear desire to specialise in business partnering and move away from pure generalist work.
- 3
Specialist from a CoE (e.g., Senior Comp Analyst, Talent Manager)
4-6 yearsSkills to master
- While you'll have deep expertise in one HR area, you'll need to broaden your understanding of other HR disciplines and develop strong generalist HRBP skills, particularly in employee relations and organisational development.
You're ready to move on when
- Demonstrable experience in consulting with business leaders on your area of expertise.
- A strong desire to move into a broader, more generalist HR role.
- Having taken on project leadership roles that required cross-functional HR collaboration.
- A commitment to quickly upskilling in areas like ER and OD.
