The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Capacity Planning Analyst (Internal Promotion)
3-5 years as a Senior AnalystSkills to master
- As a Senior, you'll have mastered designing complex models, leading workstreams, and mentoring junior colleagues. To step up to Lead, you'll need to demonstrate strategic thinking, the ability to define frameworks, and a readiness to manage direct reports.
You're ready to move on when
- You're consistently delivering high-impact projects with minimal supervision.
- You're already informally mentoring multiple junior analysts and they're coming to you for guidance.
- You're proactively identifying strategic opportunities for capacity improvement, not just reacting to requests.
- You've taken the initiative to present your work and influence decisions at a Director level.
- 2
Operations Manager / Logistics Manager
5-8 years in an operational management roleSkills to master
- Coming from an operational management role, you'll have a deep understanding of the day-to-day realities and constraints. To become a Lead Capacity Planning Analyst, you'll need to develop strong analytical and modelling skills, particularly in advanced forecasting and simulation, and learn to translate operational experience into data-driven plans.
You're ready to move on when
- You've managed operational teams and understand the challenges of resource allocation first-hand.
- You've taken courses or self-studied in advanced analytics, SQL, and data visualisation.
- You're passionate about moving from reactive management to proactive, data-driven planning.
- You can demonstrate how your operational experience informs a more pragmatic approach to capacity modelling.
- 3
Management Consultant (Operations/Supply Chain)
3-6 years at a consulting firm (Senior Consultant/Manager level)Skills to master
- Consultants often bring strong problem-solving, stakeholder management, and project leadership skills. To transition, you'll need to deepen your hands-on experience with specific capacity planning tools and methodologies, and adapt to the internal pace and culture of an in-house role.
You're ready to move on when
- You've led multiple operational improvement projects for clients, including some with a capacity planning component.
- You're looking for a role with deeper, long-term impact on a single organisation.
- You're comfortable with the idea of 'owning' the models and data, not just advising on them.
- You can demonstrate proficiency in the specific tech stack we use (e.g., Anaplan, Power BI, Python).
