The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior International Events Specialist / Lead
3-5 years in previous roleSkills to master
- Mastery of end-to-end event execution for major international events, strong vendor management, budget control, and initial experience mentoring junior team members. You'd have owned several Tier 1 events from start to finish.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivered major events within budget and exceeded lead generation targets.
- Successfully managed complex international logistics and stakeholder relationships independently.
- Demonstrated leadership potential by proactively taking on new responsibilities and guiding peers.
- 2
International Events Programme Manager
2-4 years in previous roleSkills to master
- Experience overseeing a portfolio of multiple events, standardising processes, managing programme-level budgets, and potentially managing a small team of direct reports. You'd be thinking about efficiency across events, not just individual event success.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managed a portfolio of 5+ events annually, optimising resource allocation and budget.
- Implemented new processes or tools that improved efficiency across multiple events.
- Received strong feedback on your ability to manage and develop junior team members.
- 3
Head of Regional Events (e.g., EMEA, APAC)

You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeded regional event targets for pipeline and brand awareness.
- Successfully built and managed relationships with regional sales and marketing leadership.
- Demonstrated strong cultural awareness and adaptability in event execution within a specific geography.
