The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Senior Copywriter
3-5 years as a Senior CopywriterSkills to master
- Moving from owning campaigns to architecting overall content strategy, developing strong leadership and mentorship skills, and demonstrating measurable impact on business goals beyond individual pieces of content.
You're ready to move on when
- You've consistently led successful multi-channel campaigns from a copy perspective.
- You're already informally mentoring junior writers and providing strong feedback.
- You're proactively identifying content gaps and proposing strategic solutions.
- You're comfortable presenting your ideas to senior stakeholders and defending them with data.
- 2
From Content Marketing Manager (without direct reports)
2-4 years in a similar strategic content roleSkills to master
- Deepening your hands-on copywriting expertise and understanding of persuasive writing techniques, while leveraging your strategic background. You'll need to show you can still get in the weeds with the words.
You're ready to move on when
- You've managed content projects and strategies, but now want to focus more on the craft and team leadership.
- You have a strong understanding of SEO and content performance metrics.
- You're keen to get back to more direct involvement in the quality and impact of the written word.
- You can demonstrate a strong portfolio of impactful content, even if it was produced by others under your direction.
- 3
From Agency Copy Lead / Associate Creative Director
8-12 years in an agency environment, leading copy teams and client accountsSkills to master
- Adapting to an in-house brand voice (which is usually much more focused than agency work), understanding internal stakeholder dynamics, and aligning content directly with long-term business objectives rather than client briefs. It's a different beast.
You're ready to move on when
- You've led creative teams and managed large-scale client content strategies.
- You're looking for a deeper connection to a single brand and its long-term success.
- You're comfortable with data-driven optimisation and proving ROI, not just winning awards.
- You can demonstrate a strong ability to build and maintain a consistent brand voice.
