The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Director of Strategic Finance / Head of FP&A (Large Enterprise)
You'd typically spend 5-8 years in a Director-level role, leading a significant part of the strategic finance function for a large, complex organisation. This is where you'd hone your enterprise-level leadership skills.Skills to master
- Leading large teams (25+), managing multi-year planning cycles, presenting to the C-suite, driving significant P&L impact, and developing a strong bench of talent. You'd also need to master navigating complex internal politics and influencing without direct authority across different business units.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led a major financial transformation project (e.g., new planning system implementation).
- Consistently delivered enterprise-level forecast accuracy within tight variances.
- Proven ability to attract, develop, and retain top finance talent.
- Recognised as a trusted advisor by business unit VPs and Directors.
- Successfully managed investor relations for a specific division or area.
- 2
Divisional CFO / Finance Director (Medium-Large Company)
Roughly 7-10 years as a Divisional CFO or Finance Director, where you'd have full P&L accountability for a significant business unit or subsidiary. This is where you get to truly own the numbers and drive commercial outcomes.Skills to master
- Full P&L ownership, commercial finance leadership, managing a complete finance function (not just FP&A), board-level reporting for a subsidiary, and integrating finance strategy with broader business operations. You'd also need to gain experience in capital raising or M&A from a divisional perspective.
You're ready to move on when
- Demonstrated ability to grow revenue and optimise costs for a significant business unit.
- Successfully managed all aspects of finance for a division, including accounting, tax, and treasury.
- Proven ability to build strong relationships with a Divisional CEO and their leadership team.
- Experience presenting financial performance and strategy to a subsidiary board or group executive committee.
