The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Mid-Level Space Planner (Internal)
2-3 years as a Mid-Level PlannerSkills to master

You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering projects on time and budget with minimal supervision.
- Proactively identifying and solving complex space planning issues.
- Receiving positive feedback from cross-functional teams on collaboration and influence.
- Already informally mentoring new joiners or less experienced colleagues.
- 2
From Facilities Coordinator / Manager (External)
5-7 years in Facilities, with significant exposure to space planningSkills to master
- Deepening technical CAD/IWMS skills, developing strategic thinking around space utilisation, and honing presentation and influence skills for a dedicated planning role.
You're ready to move on when
- Managed significant MAC projects or office re-stacks as part of a facilities role.
- Demonstrated a keen interest and aptitude for data-driven space optimisation.
- Strong understanding of building operations and how they impact space design.
- Ready to specialise more deeply in planning rather than broad facilities management.
- 3
From Architecture / Interior Design (External)
5-8 years in a design practice, with corporate interiors experienceSkills to master
- Transitioning from client-facing design to internal corporate strategy, understanding IWMS systems, and focusing on long-term portfolio optimisation rather than one-off projects.
You're ready to move on when
- Strong portfolio of corporate interior design projects, especially test fits and workplace strategy.
- An interest in the operational and analytical side of real estate, not just aesthetics.
- Comfortable working within corporate guidelines and balancing design with efficiency metrics.
- Ready to be an internal expert, rather than an external consultant.
