How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

Senior Commercial Banking Relationship Manager (Internal Promotion)
3-5 years as a Senior RMSkills to master
- Consistently exceeding new business targets, successfully structuring complex single-bank deals, building a strong internal network with Credit, and mentoring junior analysts. You'll need to show you can handle the biggest clients.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently hitting or exceeding annual new loan volume and portfolio growth targets.
- Successfully managing a portfolio of clients with revenues between £5M and £50M.
- Demonstrating strong credit acumen and the ability to navigate complex credit discussions.
- Being the informal 'go-to' person for junior RMs or analysts for complex deal questions.
- Proactively identifying and closing cross-sell opportunities for TM and other services.

Commercial Banking Relationship Manager (from a different bank)
8-12 years total experience in commercial bankingSkills to master
- Bringing a portable book of business or a strong network of COIs, demonstrating expertise in complex credit analysis and deal structuring, and proving you can quickly adapt to our bank's internal processes and credit culture.
You're ready to move on when
- A proven track record of managing a significant commercial client portfolio and originating new business at a competitor bank.
- Strong relationships with COIs (accountants, solicitors) who can refer business.
- Experience structuring and closing deals of similar size and complexity to our target market.
- Ability to articulate complex credit decisions and present compelling business cases.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly build rapport and integrate into a new team and culture.

Corporate Banking Relationship Manager (from Mid-Market or Large Corporate)
8-12 years total experience in corporate bankingSkills to master
- Adapting your large corporate experience to the mid-market commercial segment (which can be different!), understanding the nuances of owner-managed businesses, and demonstrating a strong focus on holistic client relationships beyond just large syndicated deals.
You're ready to move on when
- Experience managing relationships with large corporate clients and complex credit facilities.
- Strong financial modelling and credit analysis skills for larger, more sophisticated businesses.
- Ability to understand and articulate the needs of privately held, owner-managed businesses.
- A desire to build deeper, more personalised relationships than often found in large corporate banking.
- Willingness to adapt to a slightly different client segment and sales approach.
