The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Audit Operations Specialist (L3)
5-8 years to reach ManagerSkills to master
- Deep expertise in GRC system administration, process optimisation, and informal team mentorship. You'd need to prove you can lead initiatives and manage small projects independently.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led multiple complex system configuration projects.
- Consistently identified and implemented significant process efficiencies.
- Demonstrated strong coaching and mentoring abilities with junior team members.
- Proactively managed key vendor relationships and escalated issues effectively.
- 2
Lead, Audit Operations (L4)
3-5 years to reach ManagerSkills to master
- Full ownership of a specific audit technology platform, experience in building custom dashboards and reports, and leading small operational projects. You'd already be managing some aspects of the GRC system roadmap.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully administered and configured a major GRC platform end-to-end.
- Built and maintained critical operational dashboards for audit leadership.
- Led a small project team to deliver a new operational capability.
- Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders on operational improvements.
- 3
Finance Operations Manager (from another department)
4-7 years to reach ManagerSkills to master
- You'd need to quickly get up to speed on audit methodologies, GRC platforms, and the specific regulatory environment. Your strength would be in process optimisation, team leadership, and budget management, which are highly transferable.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven track record of managing a high-performing operations team in a finance context.
- Demonstrated success in implementing process efficiencies and technology solutions.
- Strong understanding of financial controls and reporting requirements.
- Quickly acquired knowledge of audit-specific tools and frameworks through self-study or targeted training.
