The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

From Senior Sustainable Procurement Analyst (L3)
2-4 years at L3Skills to master
- At L3, you'd have mastered complex data analysis, independently managed significant workstreams, and started mentoring junior colleagues. To step up to Lead, you need to show you can design entire programmes, influence senior stakeholders, and take full accountability for outcomes. It's about shifting from 'doing' to 'leading' and 'shaping'.
You're ready to move on when
- You've successfully led 2-3 significant workstreams end-to-end, delivering measurable results.
- You're regularly making recommendations to management and influencing decisions beyond your immediate scope.
- You've actively mentored junior analysts, helping them develop their skills and solve problems.
- You're proactive in identifying process improvements and implementing them without constant supervision.
- You're comfortable presenting complex information to various internal and external audiences.
- 2
