The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Sustainability Program Manager (L4)
3-5 years as a Program ManagerSkills to master
- Moving from managing specific programmes to overseeing the entire function. This means developing stronger strategic planning, team leadership, and executive communication skills. You'd need to have successfully delivered several complex, cross-functional sustainability programmes.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led at least two multi-year, enterprise-wide sustainability programmes (e.g., water stewardship, supply chain decarbonisation).
- Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders and manage complex project budgets (e.g., £250K+).
- Proven track record of mentoring junior team members and leading project teams effectively.
- Deep understanding of our industry's specific sustainability challenges and opportunities.
- 2
From Senior Sustainability Specialist (L3) in a larger organisation
5-8 years as a Senior Specialist, then 2-3 years in a Lead/Manager role elsewhereSkills to master
- This path requires a significant jump in scope and responsibility. You'd need to gain experience in budget management, team leadership, and setting strategic direction, which might mean taking on a smaller Head of role at another company first, or leading a very large, complex workstream.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully owned and delivered a major workstream (e.g., full GRI reporting cycle, ISO 14001 certification for a business unit).
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide junior colleagues effectively.
- Strong technical expertise in several key sustainability domains (e.g., GHG accounting, materiality).
- Proven ability to present complex information clearly to senior management.
- 3
From ESG Consultant (Senior Manager/Director level)
8-12 years in consulting, with significant client-facing experienceSkills to master
- While consultants have broad exposure, the challenge here is moving from advising to actually owning and implementing. You'd need to demonstrate strong internal stakeholder management, team building, and the ability to operate within a corporate structure, rather than just delivering projects.
You're ready to move on when
- Led multiple client engagements focused on ESG strategy, reporting, or compliance.
- Experience managing consulting teams and client relationships at a senior level.
- Deep understanding of various industry best practices and regulatory landscapes.
- Demonstrated ability to translate strategic recommendations into actionable implementation plans.
