The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility (L5)
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- At the Manager level, you'd have mastered managing a team, owning a significant budget, developing annual strategies, and being the primary contact for ESG rating agencies. You'd be adept at translating corporate strategy into actionable programmes.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led a major sustainability programme from conception to delivery, demonstrating clear impact.
- Consistently achieved strong ESG rating improvements for the areas under your responsibility.
- Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and gain buy-in for strategic initiatives.
- Proven track record of building and developing high-performing teams.
- 2
Senior Consultant / Principal at a Sustainability Consultancy
5-8 yearsSkills to master
- Coming from consulting, you'd bring a broad understanding of ESG challenges across various industries, expertise in strategic framework development, and strong client management skills. You'd need to adapt to an in-house corporate environment and focus on long-term implementation rather than project-based delivery.
You're ready to move on when
- Led multiple strategic ESG engagements for large corporate clients, delivering tangible recommendations.
- Developed deep expertise in specific ESG domains (e.g., climate strategy, human rights due diligence).
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects, budgets, and client relationships.
- Proven capacity to influence senior client stakeholders and drive strategic change.
- 3
Head of Sustainability for a smaller organisation or business unit
4-6 yearsSkills to master
- You'd have experience owning the full sustainability agenda for a smaller entity, including strategy, reporting, and stakeholder engagement. The challenge here would be scaling up your approach to a larger, more complex business unit and navigating a bigger corporate structure.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully built and executed a comprehensive sustainability strategy for a company or significant division.
- Managed all aspects of ESG reporting and external stakeholder engagement.
- Demonstrated leadership in integrating sustainability into core business operations.
- Proven ability to operate autonomously and drive impact with limited resources.
