The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Sales Administrator / Senior Sales Operations Analyst
3-5 years in previous roleSkills to master
- Deep expertise in CRM configuration and automation, strong analytical skills, proven ability to lead small projects, excellent stakeholder management.
You're ready to move on when
- You've successfully led at least 2-3 significant sales ops projects from start to finish.
- You're the 'go-to' person for complex system issues or policy questions within your current team.
- You've regularly presented data and insights to sales managers, not just your direct boss.
- You actively mentor junior colleagues and help them solve problems.
- 2
Business Analyst (with Sales Focus)
4-6 years in previous roleSkills to master
- Strong requirements gathering, process mapping, data modelling, and experience translating business needs into technical specifications, ideally with a focus on sales or revenue-generating functions.
You're ready to move on when
- You've worked closely with sales teams to define and implement new business processes or system features.
- You're comfortable bridging the gap between business stakeholders and technical teams.
- You can articulate the business impact of technical changes.
- You're looking to move into a role with more direct ownership of sales systems and strategy.
