The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Principal Consultant (Internal)
3-5 years as a Principal ConsultantSkills to master
- Mastering portfolio management, developing a strong point of view on practice methodology, consistently influencing C-Suite stakeholders, and formally leading and mentoring a small team of consultants.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 2-3 enterprise-level programmes with significant, measurable impact.
- Consistently sought out by senior leaders for strategic advice beyond formal projects.
- Recognised as a strong people leader, with a track record of developing junior talent.
- Developed and implemented a significant improvement to the internal consulting practice's operations or methodology.
- 2
External Consulting Director/Partner
Coming in directly from a Director or Partner role at a top-tier management consulting firm (e.g., McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Deloitte, Accenture).Skills to master
- Adapting to the internal political landscape, building credibility within a corporate structure, and shifting from client acquisition to internal value creation. You'd need to learn how to 'sell' internally without a contract.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven track record of managing large client accounts and delivering complex engagements.
- Strong client relationship management skills at the C-Suite level.
- Experience leading and developing large consulting teams.
- A clear desire to drive long-term, sustainable change within a single organisation.
- 3
Senior Business Unit Leader (e.g., Head of Strategy, COO)
5-8 years in a senior operational or strategic role within a large business unit.Skills to master
- Developing a consulting toolkit, learning structured problem-solving methodologies, and understanding how to influence across different functions rather than just within your own P&L.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led significant transformation within their own business unit.
- Deep operational expertise and understanding of business challenges.
- Strong track record of driving results and managing complex projects.
- A desire to apply their operational experience to a broader, enterprise-wide strategic context.
