The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Project Coordinator / Project Support Officer
2-3 yearsSkills to master
- Mastering project administration, accurate documentation, RAID log management, basic reporting, and learning the project lifecycle inside out. It's about being the reliable backbone of a project.
You're ready to move on when
- You've independently managed smaller project tasks or work packages.
- You're seen as the go-to person for project status and documentation.
- You've started to proactively identify risks or issues, not just log them.
- You've facilitated a few project meetings on your own.
- 2
Business Analyst (with implementation focus)
3-4 yearsSkills to master
- Strong requirements gathering, process mapping, stakeholder interviewing, and translating business needs into technical specifications. Crucially, you've also been involved in the *implementation* phase, not just the analysis.
You're ready to move on when
- You've seen a solution you helped design actually get built and rolled out.
- You're comfortable bridging the gap between business and technical teams.
- You've taken ownership of user acceptance testing (UAT) or training materials.
- You've identified and proposed solutions to process inefficiencies.
- 3
Junior Consultant (Internal or External)
2-4 yearsSkills to master
- Client engagement, problem structuring, data analysis, presentation skills, and working effectively in a fast-paced, project-based environment. You've been exposed to different industries or business functions.
You're ready to move on when
- You've worked on multiple client engagements or internal projects.
- You're comfortable presenting findings and recommendations.
- You've adapted quickly to new teams and business contexts.
- You've received positive feedback on your ability to learn and contribute quickly.
