How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

Direct Entry from Education (e.g., College Leaver)
0-1 year to become fully proficientSkills to master
- Mastering all core picking, packing, and receiving procedures. Becoming proficient with our WMS and scanner. Consistently hitting accuracy targets.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently accurate in all tasks with minimal supervision.
- Proactively identifies and flags issues without being prompted.
- Demonstrates a solid understanding of our product range and warehouse layout.
- Reliable attendance and positive attitude.

Transfer from other Physical Operations (e.g., Retail Stockroom, Factory)
6-12 months to become fully proficientSkills to master
- Adapting to our specific WMS and ERP systems. Learning our unique product catalogue. Understanding our carrier relationships and shipping documentation.
You're ready to move on when
- Quickly picks up new system processes and terminology.
- Applies prior experience to suggest minor improvements (with Coordinator guidance).
- Builds good working relationships with the team and other departments.
- Takes initiative to learn about our specific business context.

Apprenticeship Programme
1-2 years (depending on programme length)Skills to master
- All aspects of the Shipping & Receiving Associate role, plus any specific modules from the apprenticeship programme (e.g., supply chain fundamentals, logistics administration).
You're ready to move on when
- Successful completion of all apprenticeship modules and assessments.
- Demonstrates a holistic understanding of the warehouse operation.
- Acts as a mentor to newer apprentices (even informally).
- Consistently exceeds performance expectations for their stage of the apprenticeship.
