The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Inventory Analyst (L2)
3-5 years as an AnalystSkills to master
- Mastering root cause analysis for discrepancies, developing strong data visualisation skills, taking ownership of smaller inventory projects, and beginning to mentor new joiners.
You're ready to move on when
- You consistently identify and resolve complex inventory issues without significant guidance.
- You've successfully led at least two projects (e.g., improving cycle count accuracy for a product group).
- You're the informal go-to person for new analysts needing help with data or system queries.
- You actively contribute to S&OP meetings, providing insightful inventory data and challenging assumptions.
- 2
From Production Planner / Scheduler
4-6 years in planning rolesSkills to master
- Deepening understanding of inventory optimisation models (EOQ, ROP), improving forecasting accuracy, and understanding the financial impact of inventory decisions.
You're ready to move on when
- You consistently meet production schedules while managing raw material availability effectively.
- You've actively worked to reduce work-in-progress (WIP) inventory and finished goods buffer stock.
- You're comfortable challenging sales forecasts and production capacity assumptions with data.
- You've demonstrated strong collaboration with warehouse teams to manage material flow.
- 3
From Warehouse Operations Lead (with strong data focus)
5-7 years in warehouse leadershipSkills to master
- Developing advanced analytical skills (Excel, BI tools), understanding statistical forecasting, and learning financial inventory metrics (Turns, DOS).
You're ready to move on when
- You've successfully managed cycle count teams and significantly improved physical inventory accuracy.
- You're a power user of the WMS and can troubleshoot complex inventory transactions.
- You've implemented process improvements on the warehouse floor that directly impacted inventory flow or accuracy.
- You actively seek to understand the 'why' behind inventory policies, not just execute them.
