The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Senior Product Researcher (L3)
3-5 years as an L3Skills to master
- At L3, you'd have mastered leading complex, multi-method studies and started mentoring junior colleagues. To step up to Lead, you'd need to show consistent strategic impact, a knack for programme management, and a clear ability to influence senior stakeholders beyond just presenting findings.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 2-3 major research programmes that directly influenced product or marketing strategy.
- Consistently sought out for advice by junior researchers and effectively guided their projects.
- Proactively identified and addressed significant knowledge gaps for your product area.
- Presented findings to Director-level stakeholders with confidence and effectively handled tough questions.

From Lead UX Researcher (from a different company)
8-12 years overall experienceSkills to master
- If you're coming from a similar Lead role, we'd expect you to already have strong programme management, team leadership, and strategic influence skills. The key here would be quickly adapting to our specific product domain, customer base, and internal processes, and understanding how research specifically impacts our Marketing efforts.
You're ready to move on when
- A strong portfolio demonstrating leadership of significant research initiatives.
- Clear evidence of building and nurturing research teams.
- Ability to quickly grasp new industry contexts and translate business needs into research questions.
- Excellent track record of collaborating with Product, Design, and Marketing teams.
- 3
From Lead Data Analyst / Scientist (with strong qualitative experience)
8-12 years overall experienceSkills to master
- You'd bring a strong quantitative foundation, which is fantastic. You'd need to demonstrate significant experience in qualitative research methodologies, data synthesis, and stakeholder management within a research context. The challenge would be shifting from purely numerical insights to a more holistic, human-centred view.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven ability to design and execute qualitative studies (e.g., interviews, usability tests).
- Experience in synthesising qualitative and quantitative data for holistic insights.
- Strong communication skills for presenting complex findings to non-technical audiences.
- A genuine passion for understanding user motivations and behaviours beyond just the numbers.
