How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

Maintenance Manager (L4) to Senior Maintenance & Reliability Manager (L5)
3-5 years as an L4Skills to master
- Moving from managing a single site's maintenance to developing multi-site strategies, leading major CAPEX projects, and building advanced reliability programmes (RCM, PdM). You'll need to master executive-level communication and financial justification.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeding performance targets (OEE, budget adherence) at your current site.
- Successfully leading at least one major CAPEX project from start to finish with clear ROI.
- Demonstrable experience in implementing significant reliability improvements (e.g., reducing reactive work by 10%+).
- Strong leadership skills, with a track record of developing your direct reports.

Principal Reliability Engineer to Senior Maintenance & Reliability Manager (L5)
4-6 years as a Principal EngineerSkills to master
- Transitioning from deep technical expertise in reliability engineering to broader operational management, including budget ownership, team leadership, and strategic stakeholder management. You'll need to develop strong people management and financial acumen.
You're ready to move on when
- Leading complex RCA investigations and implementing solutions that have a significant operational impact.
- Designing and optimising PdM programmes and RCM analyses for critical assets.
- Demonstrable ability to influence cross-functional teams without direct authority.
- A clear interest and aptitude for people management and strategic decision-making.
