The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Lead Product Safety Counsel (L4) within our organisation
3-5 years as a Lead Counsel.Skills to master
- At the Lead level, you'll have mastered managing specific product lines or regions. To step up to Principal, you'll need to demonstrate the ability to set broader legal strategy, manage higher-stakes litigation independently, and effectively lead a larger or more complex team. You'll need to show you can influence at the executive level and take accountability for a wider functional area.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 2-3 significant product launches or complex regulatory investigations from a legal perspective without direct oversight.
- Consistently received positive feedback on your ability to influence senior business leaders and manage complex cross-functional projects.
- Demonstrated strong mentorship and development of junior team members, with at least one direct report progressing to a Senior Specialist role.
- Proactively identified and implemented a significant improvement to a legal process or compliance programme that had measurable business impact.
- 2
From Senior Associate/Counsel at a leading law firm (Product Liability/Regulatory Practice)
Roughly 12-16 years PQE in a top-tier firm.Skills to master
- You'll bring deep expertise in litigation and regulatory defence. The transition requires developing a more proactive, in-house strategic mindset, focusing on prevention rather than just reaction. You'll need to master internal stakeholder management, team leadership, and understanding the commercial drivers of a business, not just the legal risks.
You're ready to move on when
- Managed multiple complex product liability cases or regulatory enforcement actions from inception to resolution.
- Demonstrated experience in advising corporate clients on proactive compliance strategies, not just reactive defence.
- Proven ability to manage client relationships and lead project teams effectively.
- A genuine interest in understanding the 'how' and 'why' of product development within a corporate setting.
- 3
From Head of Legal/Senior Counsel (Product Compliance) at a smaller or mid-sized company
5-8 years in a similar leadership role.Skills to master
- You'll likely have broad experience, but stepping into a Principal role here means operating at a larger scale, with more complex products, a wider global footprint, and higher stakes. You'll need to demonstrate the ability to manage a larger team, navigate more intricate regulatory landscapes, and influence within a more matrixed organisation.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully built or significantly scaled a product safety compliance programme for a company.
- Managed legal aspects of product launches and post-market surveillance across multiple international markets.
- Demonstrated strong leadership and team management capabilities.
- A clear understanding of the challenges and opportunities of working in a larger, more complex corporate environment.
