The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Senior Content Licensing Specialist (L3)
Roughly 3-5 years as an L3Skills to master
- At L3, you're already leading complex negotiations. To get to L4, you need to master strategic deal structuring for novel content, demonstrate strong leadership by mentoring junior staff, and prove you can influence senior stakeholders on legal strategy. You'll need to move beyond just 'doing' deals to 'architecting' them.
You're ready to move on when
- You're consistently asked to take the lead on the most challenging deals.
- Junior specialists regularly seek your advice and guidance.
- You've identified and proposed improvements to our licensing processes or playbooks.
- You're comfortable presenting complex legal issues to senior management.

From Private Practice (IP/Commercial Lawyer)
Typically 8-12 years PQE (Post-Qualified Experience)Skills to master

You're ready to move on when
- You've managed a diverse portfolio of IP and commercial matters for clients.
- You're adept at translating complex legal advice into practical business recommendations.
- You have experience leading client relationships and managing project teams.
- You've demonstrated a keen interest in the media/tech industry and content monetisation.

From In-House Counsel (General Commercial/IP)
Roughly 8-12 years in-house experienceSkills to master
- You'll have the in-house mindset, but you'll need to specialise and deepen your expertise specifically in content licensing and IP monetisation. Understanding the nuances of rights clearance, royalty structures, and territorial management will be key, as will leading a dedicated licensing team.
You're ready to move on when
- You've handled a significant volume of commercial contracts, including some IP-focused ones.
- You're known for your pragmatic, business-focused legal advice.
- You've taken on informal leadership or mentoring roles within your current legal team.
- You've actively sought out projects or training related to content licensing or IP strategy.
