The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Lead Counsel, Digital & Product (L4)
2-4 years at L4Skills to master
- At L4, you'd have mastered designing and implementing legal frameworks for new products and managing specific legal verticals. To step up, you'll need to show consistent success in informal mentorship, a broader strategic perspective beyond your specific vertical, and a clear ability to influence senior VPs.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 2-3 major product launches from a legal perspective without significant issues.
- Consistently provided strategic advice that directly impacted business unit decisions.
- Demonstrated the ability to manage complex legal projects with minimal oversight.
- Informally mentored junior lawyers, helping them develop their skills and confidence.
- 2
From Senior Legal Counsel (External, Large E-commerce/Tech Co.)
Equivalent 12-15 years PQESkills to master

You'll need to quickly understand our specific business model and culture, building trust with our VPs and demonstrating your leadership capabilities.
You're ready to move on when
- Managed a legal team of at least 3-5 lawyers in a previous role.
- Directly advised C-suite or VP-level executives on high-stakes legal matters.
- Led complex, multi-jurisdictional legal projects or compliance programmes.
- Proven ability to integrate into new organisations and quickly add value.
