The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior ESG Investor Relations Associate (L3) to Manager (L4)
2-3 years at L3Skills to master
- At L3, you'd have mastered a major reporting workstream, managed a ratings agency relationship, and started mentoring. To step up to L4, you need to prove you can design the *overall* strategy, manage multiple workstreams, and lead a small team effectively.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led two full annual reporting cycles (e.g., sustainability report, TCFD).
- Consistently improved our standing with a key ESG ratings agency through direct engagement.
- Demonstrated strong project management skills, delivering complex projects on time.
- Received positive feedback on your informal mentorship of junior colleagues.
- 2
ESG Consultant (Senior level) to Manager (L4)
3-5 years in consultingSkills to master
- Consultants bring broad experience across clients. To transition, you'd need to show you can apply that strategic thinking to a single corporate context, build internal relationships, and lead an in-house team rather than just project-based client work.
You're ready to move on when
- Managed multiple client engagements focused on ESG strategy or reporting.
- Developed and presented strategic recommendations to senior client leadership.
- Experience leading project teams, even if not direct reports.
- A strong desire to 'own' the ESG narrative for one company long-term.
