The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Senior ESG Investor Relations Associate (L3) or Manager (L4)
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- Moving from executing workstreams to leading entire programmes, managing a team, and becoming the primary external face for ESG investors. You'd need to master stakeholder influence and strategic narrative development.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led a major ESG reporting project (e.g., full sustainability report) end-to-end.
- Demonstrated ability to engage directly and effectively with institutional investors on ESG topics.
- Proven track record of mentoring junior team members and taking ownership of their development.
- Consistently identified and proposed solutions to complex ESG data or reporting challenges.
- 2
From Senior Investor Relations Manager (with ESG focus)
2-4 yearsSkills to master
- Deepening your ESG technical expertise (frameworks, ratings, climate analysis) and shifting your IR focus to the specific demands of ESG-mandated funds. You'd need to become an expert in ESG data integrity and storytelling.
You're ready to move on when
- Managed significant investor relationships, including those with an ESG mandate.
- Contributed to or led sections of ESG disclosures within broader IR responsibilities.
- Demonstrated strong analytical skills, particularly with financial and non-financial data.
- Proven ability to influence internal stakeholders and manage complex projects.
- 3
From Senior ESG Consultant (Big 4 or Specialist Firm)
3-6 yearsSkills to master
- Transitioning from advisory to in-house execution and ownership. This means getting comfortable with the day-to-day operational realities, internal politics, and long-term accountability of a corporate role, rather than project-based work. You'll need to build strong internal relationships and adapt your influencing style.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully advised multiple clients on ESG strategy, reporting, or investor engagement.
- Developed deep expertise in ESG frameworks, ratings, and market trends.
- Demonstrated project management skills, often with client-facing responsibilities.
- A clear desire to move into an in-house role with direct, long-term impact and team leadership.
