The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Global HR Operations Specialist (L2)
2-3 years at L2Skills to master
- At L2, you'd have mastered routine process execution and troubleshooting. To step up, you need to show you can independently identify and propose solutions, take ownership of entire processes, and begin to mentor others. Proactive problem-solving and a solid grasp of system configuration are key.
You're ready to move on when
- You're the person junior specialists come to for help before their manager.
- You've successfully led at least one small process improvement initiative from start to finish.
- You're consistently meeting or exceeding all L2 performance metrics, especially around data accuracy and ticket resolution.
- You've taken on more complex troubleshooting tasks and resolved them independently.
- You've actively contributed to improving our knowledge base or internal documentation.
- 2
From HRIS Analyst (Mid-Level)
3-5 years as an HRIS AnalystSkills to master
- You'll already have strong technical HRIS skills. To transition, you need to broaden your understanding of global HR processes, compliance, and the employee lifecycle beyond just system functionality. Developing your process optimisation and stakeholder influence skills will be crucial.
You're ready to move on when
- You've configured complex modules within an HRIS and understand their business implications.
- You've worked on projects that involved improving HR processes, not just system maintenance.
- You can articulate the 'why' behind HR policies and how they impact system design.
- You've collaborated effectively with HR Business Partners and other HR functions.
- You've taken initiative to learn about global HR regulations or specific country nuances.
- 3
From HR Generalist (with strong Ops/Systems focus)
4-6 years as an HR GeneralistSkills to master
- You'll have a good grasp of HR principles. To move into this specialist role, you'll need to deepen your technical HRIS configuration skills, develop a strong process mindset, and gain experience in global compliance and data integrity. Your focus will shift from general support to operational excellence and system mastery.
You're ready to move on when
- You've been the go-to person for HRIS questions in your generalist role.
- You've actively participated in HR system implementations or upgrades.
- You've identified and solved process inefficiencies within your HR remit.
- You have a solid understanding of employee data management and its importance.
- You're comfortable with data analysis and reporting using tools like Excel.
