The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

- Mastering independent resolution of Tier 1 queries, consistently meeting SLAs, developing strong data entry accuracy, and building foundational knowledge of all HR policies and systems. You'll need to show you can take ownership of your case queue.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently resolving 90%+ of your assigned tickets without escalation.
- Receiving excellent feedback from employees on your helpfulness and clarity.
- Proactively identifying minor process issues and suggesting solutions to your manager.
- Successfully guiding new joiners through basic HR processes and system navigation.
- 2
HR Generalist (Small/Mid-sized Company)

- Having managed end-to-end HR processes for a specific employee group or small company.
- Demonstrating strong problem-solving skills across various HR domains.
- Comfortable with HRIS administration and reporting.
- Able to handle sensitive employee issues with discretion and empathy.
- 3
Specialist in a specific HR domain (e.g., Payroll Assistant, Benefits Administrator)

You're ready to move on when
- Being the go-to person for complex queries within your specialism.
- Having successfully managed projects or initiatives within your domain (e.g., annual enrolment, payroll system migration).
- Demonstrating an understanding of the downstream impact of your specialism on other HR functions.
