How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

Record to Report Analyst (L2) Internally
2-3 years as an R2R Analyst.Skills to master
- You'll need to have independently owned a portfolio of balance sheet accounts, consistently delivered accurate work on time, and started to identify minor process improvements.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently hitting all month-end deadlines for your assigned accounts.
- Requiring minimal review notes from your manager on routine reconciliations.
- Proactively flagging potential issues or discrepancies before they become problems.
- Starting to informally help or guide new joiners on basic tasks.

Senior Accountant (External)
Coming from a similar senior role in another company, usually 5+ years total experience.Skills to master
- You'll already have experience with complex reconciliations, financial close processes, and ideally some exposure to process improvement or audit management.
You're ready to move on when
- Ability to articulate complex accounting scenarios and their resolutions.
- Demonstrable experience leading parts of a financial close.
- Comfortable with major ERP systems and close management tools.
- Strong references from previous managers highlighting your accuracy and initiative.
