The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Tax Analyst (Big 4 / Large Corporate)
You'd typically spend 3-5 years as a Senior Tax Analyst, mastering complex compliance and provision tasks, before stepping into a Manager role. This is a very common route.Skills to master
- Deep technical expertise in ASC 740/IAS 12, leading complex audit sections, mentoring junior staff, and taking ownership of significant compliance workstreams.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering high-quality, error-free tax provisions and returns.
- Successfully leading smaller audit engagements or significant sections of larger ones.
- Proactively identifying process improvements and implementing them.
- Demonstrating strong informal leadership and mentorship of junior team members.
- 2
Tax Manager (Smaller Firm / Industry)
If you're coming from a smaller firm or a less complex industry role, you might have already been a manager for 2-4 years, but you'll need to scale up your technical depth and people management for our organisation.Skills to master
- Adapting to our specific industry's tax complexities, managing a larger team, and navigating the internal politics of a larger corporate environment.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven ability to manage a full tax compliance cycle independently.
- Experience with more complex tax provision calculations (e.g., FIN 48).
- Strong track record of managing and developing direct reports.
- Quickly grasping new technical areas and applying them effectively.
- 3
Lead Tax Analyst (Internal Promotion)
Many of our Managers come from within, having spent 2-4 years as a Lead Tax Analyst, demonstrating readiness for broader responsibility and people management.Skills to master
- Taking full ownership of a major compliance stream, managing significant projects (e.g., a software implementation), and consistently exceeding expectations in mentorship.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managing the quarterly tax provision process end-to-end.
- Consistently receiving excellent feedback on mentorship and team support.
- Proactively identifying and resolving complex tax issues without direct supervision.
- Demonstrating strong communication and influence with cross-functional teams.
