The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Relationship Banking Manager (L3/L4) to Team Lead
3-5 years as a Senior RMSkills to master
- Beyond managing your own book, you'll need to show you can mentor junior staff, take on informal leadership roles (e.g., leading a project), and consistently exceed targets whilst maintaining excellent portfolio quality. You need to demonstrate strategic thinking beyond your own client base.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeding individual sales and portfolio growth targets.
- Recognised as a go-to expert for complex deals or client issues within your current team.
- Positive feedback from junior colleagues you've informally mentored.
- Proactively identifying and championing process improvements or new market opportunities.
- 2
Credit Manager / Senior Underwriter to Team Lead
5-7 years in credit, with client-facing exposureSkills to master
- You'll need to bridge the gap between credit expertise and commercial acumen. This means developing strong sales and relationship management skills, understanding market dynamics, and proving you can balance risk with growth. You'll need to be able to 'sell' a deal, not just underwrite it.
You're ready to move on when
- Demonstrated ability to present and defend complex credit proposals to senior management.
- Experience in client-facing roles, even if not formal RM.
- Strong understanding of commercial client needs and market trends.
- Ability to articulate risk in a commercial context, not just a technical one.
- 3
Specialised Lending Manager (e.g., Asset Finance, Trade Finance)
4-6 years in a specialised lending roleSkills to master
- You'll need to broaden your product knowledge beyond your specialism to encompass the full commercial banking offering. This means developing a more generalist view of client needs and being able to lead a team that offers diverse solutions. You'll also need to develop broader team leadership skills.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven success in growing a specialised lending portfolio.
- Ability to cross-sell other bank products beyond your specialism.
- Experience in managing client relationships end-to-end.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with generalist RMs.
