How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

- At L4, you'd have mastered designing and implementing strategy for specific channel segments and managed a small team. To step up to L5, you'd need to demonstrate broader strategic ownership, significant budget accountability, and the ability to lead a larger, more complex team.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully owned and scaled a major channel (e.g., chat or self-service) across the business.
- Consistently delivered on strategic projects with measurable business impact (e.g., 10% reduction in AHT, 5% increase in FCR).
- Mentored and developed at least 2-3 junior team members who have gone on to take on more responsibility.
- Proactively identified and solved cross-functional operational challenges, demonstrating strong influencing skills.

5-8 years in a similar senior management roleSkills to master
- You'd bring a strong track record of managing multi-channel operations, ideally in a fast-paced tech or digital environment. We'd be looking for evidence of strategic thinking, budget management, and significant team leadership experience.
You're ready to move on when
- Managed a customer service channels budget of at least £500K.
- Led a team of 10+ people, including other managers or team leads.
- Successfully implemented a major channel technology or process improvement initiative.
- Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders and drive strategic change.

8-12 years in consulting, with focus on CX/OperationsSkills to master
- You'd bring a broad perspective on industry best practices and a strong methodology for problem-solving and strategy development. We'd want to see how you translate theoretical knowledge into practical, implementable solutions within an operational setting.
You're ready to move on when
- Led multiple client engagements focused on customer service channel optimisation or CX strategy.
- Developed and presented strategic recommendations to C-suite level clients.
- Proven ability to manage complex projects with diverse stakeholder groups.
- A clear understanding of the operational realities and challenges of running a contact centre.
