The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

From Customer Strategist (L2)
2-3 years as a Customer StrategistSkills to master
- Mastering independent project execution, taking full ownership of workstreams, developing strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and beginning to influence cross-functional peers. You'll have moved from 'doing' to 'owning'.
You're ready to move on when

- Proactively identifies strategic opportunities and proposes solutions.

- Has informally mentored junior team members or new joiners.
- 2
From Senior CX Analyst / Insights Specialist
5-7 years in an analytical CX roleSkills to master
- Transitioning from purely analytical work to strategic design and implementation. This means not just finding the 'what' and 'why' in the data, but also designing the 'how' and 'what next'. You'll need to develop your influencing and communication skills to drive change.
You're ready to move on when
- Beyond reporting, you've used insights to drive actual changes in process or product.
- You've presented findings and recommendations to senior leaders, not just your direct manager.
- You're comfortable with qualitative research methods (e.g., interviews, journey mapping) alongside quantitative.
- You've shown a knack for translating complex data into simple, actionable business language.
- 3
From Service Designer (Agency or In-house)
4-6 years in a dedicated Service Design roleSkills to master
- Adapting service design principles to a fast-paced, in-house environment with a strong focus on measurable business impact. You'll need to get comfortable with our specific tech stack and data sources, and learn how to navigate internal politics to get your designs implemented.
You're ready to move on when
- You've led end-to-end service design projects, from discovery to implementation.
- You're skilled in co-creation workshops and user research.
- You can clearly articulate the business value of good service design.
- You're comfortable working with existing systems and constraints, not just greenfield projects.
