The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

3-5 years as a senior EHS ManagerSkills to master
- Moving from managing a site or region to a full business unit requires a significant step up in strategic thinking, multi-site programme management, and influencing at the VP/GM level. You'll need to demonstrate P&L management for EHS and experience presenting to senior leadership.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led a major EHS programme implementation across multiple sites.
- Consistently achieved significant reductions in incident rates and regulatory non-conformances.
- Managed a team of EHS professionals and demonstrated strong leadership capabilities.
- Presented EHS performance and strategy to senior operational leaders.

You'll need to prove you can build and lead an internal team, manage significant operational budgets, and drive long-term cultural change, not just advise.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led large-scale EHS transformation projects for multiple clients.
- Developed and implemented EHS management systems that achieved certification.
- Demonstrated strong project management and client relationship skills.
- Comfortable with the transition from advisory to direct operational accountability.
- 3
From Head of Regulatory Affairs (related industry)
5-8 years in a senior regulatory roleSkills to master
- While you'll have a strong grasp of regulations, you'll need to build expertise in the 'H' and 'S' aspects of EHS, including incident investigation, safety programme design, and occupational health. You'll also need to develop strong operational leadership skills and the ability to manage technical EHS teams.
You're ready to move on when
- Expertise in interpreting and applying complex regulatory frameworks.
- Proven ability to influence regulatory policy or manage significant compliance programmes.
- A demonstrable passion for and understanding of occupational safety and environmental protection.
- Willingness to learn and lead the operational aspects of EHS.
