How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

From Network Engineer (L2)
3-5 years as a Network EngineerSkills to master
- You'd need to have moved beyond just executing tasks to independently owning projects, troubleshooting complex issues, and showing initiative in improving network stability. Mentoring junior staff and taking on more design responsibility would be key.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently resolving P1/P2 incidents without escalation.
- Successfully leading small-to-medium network projects (e.g., office move network setup).
- Demonstrating strong documentation habits and contributing to network standards.
- Being the informal 'go-to' person for tricky technical questions from peers.

From NOC Engineer / Operations Lead
5-7 years in a Network Operations Centre (NOC) or similar operational roleSkills to master
- You'd need to transition from reactive monitoring and incident response to proactive design and implementation. This means building deep knowledge of routing, switching, and security principles, and gaining hands-on config experience.
You're ready to move on when
- Exceptional incident management and troubleshooting skills.
- Deep understanding of network monitoring tools and metrics.
- Strong grasp of network fundamentals (OSI model, TCP/IP, routing basics).
- Demonstrated ability to automate routine operational tasks.

From Specialist Roles (e.g., Firewall Engineer, Cloud Network Specialist)
4-6 years in a highly specialised network roleSkills to master
- You'd need to broaden your expertise beyond your specialisation. A Firewall Engineer, for example, would need to gain strong routing and switching skills, while a Cloud Network Specialist would need to understand on-premise integration and legacy systems.
