The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

Typically 3-5 years as a Principal.Skills to master
- Deep expertise in multi-protocol architecture, strategic technical decision-making, leading complex cross-functional projects, and mentoring other architects. You'd have owned the technical vision for major product lines.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully designed and overseen the deployment of multiple high-value protocols.
- Consistently provided technical leadership and mentorship to senior engineers and leads.
- Demonstrated ability to influence product strategy through technical insights.
- Managed significant technical risks and guided successful incident responses.
- 2
Senior Engineering Manager (Blockchain/DeFi)

You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led large engineering organisations (50+ engineers) in a regulated environment.
- Proven ability to drive technological transformation and innovation.
- A strong personal interest and foundational understanding of blockchain technology.
