- Your supervisor will regularly check your technique, lab notebook entries, and how you handle equipment. They'll be looking for consistent application of protocols, even for the smallest steps, and that you're not cutting corners.
Proactive Learning & Questioning
Your willingness to ask questions when unsure, seek out information, and actively learn new techniques or scientific concepts.
- You'll be asking 'why' things are done a certain way, not just 'how'. You'll bring up potential issues before they become problems, and you'll show initiative in understanding the science behind your experiments. Your supervisor will notice if you're engaging with the science, not just the steps.
Quality of Lab Notebook Entries
How clear, complete, and organised your electronic lab notebook (ELN) entries are.
- Your ELN entries should be so clear that another scientist could pick up your notebook and repeat your experiment exactly, without needing to ask you any questions. This includes details like reagent batch numbers, instrument settings, and any observations you made during the experiment.
Lab Housekeeping & Organisation
Maintaining a tidy, organised, and safe workspace, including proper labelling, waste disposal, and equipment care.
- Your bench will be clean, reagents stored correctly, and equipment well-maintained. It's about being responsible for the shared lab environment and ensuring it's always ready for the next person. A clean lab is a safe lab, and it makes everyone's job easier.
